The Why of Coaching is Your Leadership Transformation

Stories of Leadership Transformation

THE SELF-COMPASSIONATE LEADER

As a leader, I went from struggling with imposter syndrome to achieving a healthy level of confidence. I learned how to practice self-compassion as a leadership skill and to start seeing myself realistically instead of being overly focused on my weaknesses and shortcomings. Although I still have self-doubt sometimes, I no longer doubt that I deserve the success I've created for myself or that I don't belong in the leadership rooms I'm in just because I might be younger, look different than, or have different experiences from others there. I now know I've worked hard for and earned what I have achieved.

THE AUTHENTIC INTROVERTED LEADER

I'm an introvert and was penalized for it at work. Despite being a high performer, I was given feedback that I didn't speak or "contribute" enough in meetings compared to colleagues who tended to be loud and verbose. I went from being an introverted leader in a workplace that rewarded extroversion to realizing how I could leverage the strengths I uniquely had as an introvert to be an effective communicator—my way, to positively differentiate myself, and to use my introversion and authenticity to strengthen my executive presence, realizing that I didn't need to conform to a traditional, static concept of what leadership is supposed look like.

THE SUSTAINABLY EXCELLENT LEADER

I wanted to show up consistently well as a leader in all aspects of my life, so I went from feeling overworked and stressed out to being able to achieve a sense of well-being and personal sustainability with my leadership grounded in my core values. This helped me show up at my best at work so that I didn't have to just give what was leftover of me for everything else. I accomplished this by learning how to set clear expectations for my team upfront, delegated more effectively, took a more coach-like approach to developing the team and its members, set and maintained boundaries for myself, created a shutdown from work routine, and made a choice to practice self-care consistently.

THE EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT LEADER

It's important for a leader to be able to manage conflict and difficult conversations well. I used to be the leader that avoided it whenever possible and agonized in anxiety when I couldn't. I went from feeling extremely nervous in anticipation of these types of situations, getting easily flustered in the middle of them, and beating myself up afterward for not having done better in the moment to now being able to face, address, and navigate through these situations confidently and effectively. I learned how to be more emotionally intelligent in better managing my own emotions and in demonstrating genuine empathy and caring to help others. It's important to me to do my best to be a compassionate communicator, especially when emotions are running high for everyone involved.
